How to Ship Peptides: Complete Guide
The practical guide for peptide brands that need to ship product without degradation, damage, or compliance issues.
Shipping research peptides is straightforward once you understand the three variables that matter: temperature, packaging, and carrier selection. Get these right and your peptides arrive stable. Get them wrong and you're eating refunds.
Temperature: The Non-Negotiable
Peptides are proteins. Proteins degrade with heat. This is basic chemistry, but a surprising number of e-commerce brands ship peptides like they're shipping t-shirts.
Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are relatively stable at room temperature for short periods. A 2-3 day ground shipment in cool weather is generally fine. But during summer months or for shipments crossing hot regions, cold packs are essential.
Reconstituted peptides — peptides already in solution — are more fragile. They need cold chain from the moment they leave storage until they reach the customer. No exceptions, no shortcuts.
Practical Temperature Guidelines
- Storage: 2-8°C for reconstituted peptides. Room temperature (below 25°C) for sealed lyophilized peptides.
- Transit: Cold packs for any shipment expected to exceed 2 days in transit or during months where ambient temperatures exceed 80°F.
- Seasonal adjustment: In summer, upgrade to insulated mailers or EPS coolers with additional gel packs. Shift carrier preference toward faster services.
Packaging That Protects
Peptide vials are glass. Glass breaks. This sounds obvious, but we've seen too many brands lose product because their packaging was an afterthought.
Essential Packaging Components
- Individual vial protection: Foam inserts, bubble wrap sleeves, or custom die-cut trays that hold each vial in place. Loose vials in a box is a recipe for breakage.
- Cold chain materials: Gel packs (not loose ice) wrapped in absorbent material to prevent condensation from damaging labels. Phase-change packs for longer transit times.
- Insulation: Foam-lined mailers for standard orders. EPS (expanded polystyrene) coolers for high-value or temperature-critical shipments.
- Outer box: Corrugated box sized to the shipment. Oversized boxes allow products to shift. Undersized boxes get crushed.
- Discreet labeling: No product names on the exterior. Ship under your business name. Customers in this space value privacy.
Carrier Selection
Not all carriers handle peptide shipments the same way. The main consideration is transit time — every hour your package sits in a hot warehouse or delivery truck is a risk.
- USPS Priority Mail: 1-3 days, cost-effective for most domestic shipments. Good for lyophilized peptides with cold packs.
- UPS/FedEx Ground: 1-5 days depending on distance. Fine for cooler months, risky in summer for long-distance.
- UPS/FedEx Express: Next-day or 2-day. Use for reconstituted peptides or when temperatures are high. The cost premium is cheaper than a refund.
Compliance Basics
Research peptides are legal to sell and ship in the United States when labeled for research use only. That said, there are practices that keep you out of trouble:
- Label all products "For Research Use Only — Not for Human Consumption"
- Don't make therapeutic claims on your website, packaging, or inserts
- Keep lot tracking records for every unit shipped
- Avoid shipping anything on DEA schedules I-V
- Know your state's regulations — some states have additional restrictions
When to Outsource to a 3PL
Self-fulfilling works at low volumes. Once you're past 50-100 orders per month, the economics and reliability of a specialized 3PL start making sense. The key word is specialized — a generic 3PL that doesn't understand cold chain or peptide packaging will cause more problems than it solves.
Look for a 3PL that already ships peptides, offers cold chain as standard (not an expensive add-on), tracks lot numbers in their system, and won't give you a "we need to review your product category" email three weeks after onboarding.
