Peptide Packaging Requirements: Vials, Padding, and Discretion

Your peptide is only as good as the packaging that delivers it.

Peptide packaging serves three purposes: protect the product from damage, maintain temperature during transit, and arrive discreetly. Most brands get one or two of these right. Here's how to nail all three.

Vial Protection

Research peptides typically ship in glass vials — 2mL, 5mL, or 10mL sizes. Glass breaks. It breaks in carrier sorting facilities. It breaks when a delivery driver drops your package. It breaks when two vials rattle against each other inside a poorly packed box.

Best Practices for Vial Protection

  1. Individual wrapping: Each vial should be wrapped in bubble wrap or placed in a foam sleeve. Never let two glass vials touch each other inside a package.
  2. Custom inserts: For high-volume brands, die-cut foam inserts or molded pulp trays that hold each vial in a specific position. These prevent movement and look professional when the customer opens the box.
  3. Void fill: Any empty space in the box should be filled with kraft paper, air pillows, or foam peanuts. The goal is zero movement when the box is shaken.
  4. Right-sized boxes: Use boxes sized for your most common order configurations. A single 2mL vial shouldn't ship in a 12x12x12 box.

Temperature Packaging

Cold chain packaging adds a layer of complexity. The cold pack needs to stay cold long enough to protect the peptide, but it can't directly touch the vial (condensation can damage labels and cause the vial to slip out of position).

Standard Cold Chain Setup

  1. Gel pack: Frozen to -18°C or colder. Wrapped in a thin layer of absorbent material to prevent condensation dripping onto vials.
  2. Insulating barrier: A foam sheet or bubble wrap layer between the gel pack and the vials. This prevents the gel pack from directly contacting and potentially freezing the peptide.
  3. Insulated mailer or liner: Foam-lined mailers for standard shipments. EPS coolers for multi-vial orders or high-value products. Thermal reflective liners for an extra layer of protection.

Discreet Packaging

Discretion matters in this industry. Your customers don't want "RESEARCH PEPTIDES" printed on the outside of their package. Here's the standard:

  • Plain exterior box: No logos, no product images, no marketing copy on the outside of the package
  • Business name only on shipping label: The return address should show your business entity name, not "PeptideCo" or anything product-specific
  • No packing slips with product names visible through the box: If you include a packing slip, it should be inside the box, not visible through a clear panel
  • Unbranded tape: Clear packing tape or plain kraft tape. No branded tape on the exterior.

Labeling Requirements

The vials themselves need proper labeling:

  • Product name and concentration
  • "For Research Use Only — Not for Human Consumption"
  • Lot number and manufacture/expiry date
  • Storage instructions
  • Your company name and contact information

Cost Optimization

Packaging costs add up fast. Here's how to optimize without cutting corners:

  • Standardize box sizes: Pick 2-3 box sizes that cover 90% of your order configurations. Buying in bulk reduces per-unit cost significantly.
  • Buy gel packs in bulk: Individual gel packs cost $0.75-1.50. Buy by the case (100+) and you're under $0.50 each.
  • Use insulated mailers for single-vial orders: Foam-lined mailers are cheaper than box + thermal liner for small orders.
  • Custom inserts at scale: Die-cut foam inserts are expensive for small runs but become cost-effective at 500+ units. They also reduce breakage, which pays for itself in saved product.
